eStatement members to get eNotices starting Nov. 1

Effective November 1, Pen Air FCU will introduce eNotices to all eStatement members! You will receive an email notifying you when a notice has been delivered to your eStatement portal. Most paper notices will still be mailed to members who are not enrolled for eStatements.

Please note that, regardless of whether you receive paper statements or eStatements, you will not receive paper nor electronic NSF, Overdraft, or Fee notices. This information can be retrieved in a more timely manner by setting up an Alert inside of Internet Access or by calling FlexTone.

Pen Air, CCCSNF team up for Shred It Day

In honor of National Protect Your ID Week, Pen Air and Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Northwest Florida are teaming up to offer members a Shred It Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at our Corporate Office, 1495 E. Nine Mile Road, Pensacola.

A Shred Truck and Equipment Truck (for old PCs or small electronic devices that may hold personal data - no TVs or appliances) will be available for information disposal. Members are limited to two 2x2-foot boxes of materials to shred per person. For more information, call CCCSNF's Libby Rogers at 434-0268, Ext. 206.

Change in Terms Notice Regarding Open End Loans

In order to comply with recent changes in the Truth in Lending regulation, Pen Air FCU will be advancing the due date on all open end loans to the last day of the month effective October 1, 2011.

Please note that this only pertains to open end loans. These loans are identified on monthly statements with “(Open End)” after the loan description. If you have an open end loan, you will notice the change on your statement.

What this means for you if you have an open end loan:

• If your due date is currently set for the last day of the month, nothing will change.

• If your due date is not the last day of the month, your payment will be moved from its current date to the last day of the month. Please know you can continue to make your loan payments on the same day and in the same manner as you do today.

You do not need to take advantage of the extra time. You can continue paying your loan as you are now. However, if you want or need the additional time, you will now have until the end of month.

Community Credit Union Hit by Tornado Almost Ready to Open

A few months ago, Pen Air FCU lent our Mobile Service Center to a fellow credit union in Gadsden, Alabama. Community Credit Union's branch was destroyed by the tornados that swept through Alabama and left nothing but one drive thru teller tube:

Rebuilding Progress as of July 11, 2011

We let them borrow our mobile branch so that they could continue business as best as they could to service their members. In July, they sent us pictures of their progess- a foundation had been built! Now in September, their branch is almost completed. We are excited for them!

Debt Ceiling Crisis: How Pen Air Will Help Those Affected

In response to the possible Debt Ceiling Crisis, Pen Air Federal Credit Union will offer its military and civil service member-owners with direct deposit, a 6-month, no-interest loan up to the full amount of their paycheck. This loan also applies to member-owners with direct deposit from government agencies such as Social Security.

“We are ready to help,” said Pen Air President/CEO Ron Fields. “To help give our members some financial piece of mind.”

If they are affected by the Debt Ceiling Crisis, member-owners should simply stop by their nearby Pen Air branch or call (850) 505-3200 to make loan arrangements. Pen Air FCU will also assist non-members with a personal loan up to the amount of their paycheck for a term of six months. The interest rate will be based off of the person’s credit worthiness. Member-owners with existing Pen Air loans can contact the credit union to arrange for payment options.

“If you, or someone you know, become affected by this crisis, we urge you to come in,” Fields said. “We will work something out.”

Top 10 Ways Americans are trimming back expenses

   Between the beginning of the recession in 2007 up until May 2011, Americans have cut spending by nearly $7,300 compared to what they would've otherwise spent if the recession didn't occur. Looks like the recession had a lingering silver lining. Reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the report shows that the average consumer spent about $175 less each month than before the recession.

   Hats off to all you consumers out there for pinching pennies at the grocery store, clipping coupons, skipping morning lattes, trimming vacations, and whatever small yet significant ways your own household tightened its belt to cope with the recession. It's healthy to trim the fat from your finances, and imagine what $175 saved each month can go towards—to pad a savings account, build an emergency fund, or hack away at debt.

   Consumer spending is inching up since the start of 2011, which is necessary for a recovering economy. However, look for ways to keep up your smart saving and budgeting; slipping back into pre-recession spending habits could lead to the same over-borrowing on credit that pushed Americans to the brink of recession.

   Need motivation to keep up money-saving habits?

   Try following the crowd! A recent Harris poll found the top 10 ways Americans are cutting back on spending, which can definitely help keep you on the right track for smart spending.
1) 67% of Americans started purchasing more generic brand goods at the grocery store.

2) Almost half of us, at 46%, are brown-bagging lunch from home instead of buying.

3) 43% are skipping appointments and going to the hairdresser or barber less often.

4) 39% switched from purchasing bottled water to using a refillable water bottle (a wallet and environment friendly move).

5) 31% cancelled one or more magazine subscriptions (also environmentally friendly).

6) About a quarter of us, at 24%, are cutting down on dry cleaning.

7) 22% cancelled or downgraded television cable.

8) 21% are skipping buying coffee in the morning (and maybe making it at home instead).

9) Following #5, 18% cancelled a newspaper subscription .

10) 16% cancelled landline phones and are relying on cell phone instead.

Fields selected for Top 100 Power List

Local weekly newspaper The Independent News announced in June that Pen Air FCU President and CEO Ron Fields had been selected for its 2011 Power List.

“I’m truly honored to have received this recognition and hope this serves as inspiration for other businesses to step up and be active in their community,” Fields said.

Independent News publisher Rick Outzen said a committee takes the publicly-nominated individuals and selects 100 of the most influential for the list. This is the fifth year Independent News has published the Power List.

“Those selected are the business leaders that have done a lot for the community, and strive to make Pensacola a better place to live” Outzen said.

Pen Air wins LSCU Louise Herring Award

The League of Southeastern Credit Unions has awarded Pen Air the 2011 Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award for credit unions with more than $1 billion in assets. The entry will also be judged at the national level later this year. Pen Air earned second place in its asset size for the Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility.

“Pen Air is humbled and honored to be this year’s recipient of the Louise Herring Award,” Pen Air FCU President/CEO Ron Fields said. “We were simply doing what was right for our membership and the community.”

Pen Air earns first place for fundraising

The Pensacola American Cancer Society Relay for Life committee awarded Pen Air FCU first place for raising more than $11,000 for the May 21 event.

Johnson named Volunteer of the Year

The League of Southeastern Credit Unions has named Board of Directors Chairman Maurice Johnson the 2011 Volunteer of the Year.

Tuyo named Professional of the Year

The National Association of Federal Credit Unions has named Chief Financial Officer David Tuyo the 2011 Professional of the Year for credit unions larger than $150 million in assets.

“It is a blessing and an honor to have been selected,” Tuyo said. “I want to thank the credit union, our CEO and President Ron Fields, the Board of Directors, the Pen Air team, my family, and my wife, Amber. The level of support is just unparalleled.”

Pen Air FCU Board Chairman named LSCU Volunteer of the Year

The League of Southeastern Credit Unions has named Pen Air Federal Credit Union Board of Directors Chairman Maurice Johnson the 2011 Volunteer of the Year.

“The LSCU is proud to recognize these professionals, volunteers, and credit unions that have made outstanding contributions to the development and growth of the credit union movement in Alabama and Florida,” the LSCU wrote in a recent announcement naming the award winners.

Johnson will be honored in conjunction with the LSCU’s Annual Convention and Exposition Closing General Session June 18 in Orlando, Fla.

Johnson has been a member of the credit union since 1965, served on the supervisory committee, and then the board of directors for more than 30 years. For the past seven years, Johnson has served as chairman. He is active in political affairs and makes a trip to Washington D.C. every year to promote credit unions. Johnson is also active in the chapter by attending all chapter meetings as well as other major credit union conferences. His influence has helped Pen Air FCU earn the 5-star superior rating from Bauer Financial for 81 consecutive quarters as of March 2011.

“I want to thank all of the people who helped me,” Johnson said. “You can’t do it by yourself. I want to thank my wife, the other volunteers and the staff and all of the employees who helped me get this. And I also want to thank League for the opportunity.”

Wow! What a response! We're only 6 days in to the month of May and one Pen Air FCU branch has already collected nearly 100 cell phones. Thank you to everyone who has donated them to this worthy cause! We'll be collecting them throughout the month so drop them off at your local branch!

Pen Air Now a Tornado Relief Drop Off Site

In response to the recent and devastating events that shook Alabama and other surrounding states, Pen Air federal Credit Union will be donating supplies to areas in Alabama that are in need.

Pen Air FCU President and CEO Ron Fields will be personally driving the first round of supplies collected – 1,200 bottles of water and 100 packs of baby wipes – to the areas affected this weekend.

These are the primary supplies requested by rescue workers. All Pen Air FCU locations including Century will collect donations for the tornado relief efforts, as well as become drop-off points for additional supplies, through the coming weeks.

In addition, Pen Air FCU is lending one of its two Mobile Service Centers for use in the Rainsville, Ala., area, so local residents will have access to funds.

“Pen Air is just trying to help out those who need it during this terrible time,” Fields said. “The spirit of Pen Air’s members and employees has always been one of community and this is no exception.”

Pen Air ready to assist members affected by shutdown

In response to the possible federal government shutdown, Pen Air Federal Credit Union will offer its member-owners with direct deposit, a 6-month, no-interest loan up to the full amount of their paycheck.
“We are a local institution providing local solutions,” said Pen Air President/CEO Ron Fields. “Our members have enough on their plates. They shouldn’t have to worry about receiving their paycheck, too.”

If they are affected by the shutdown, member-owners should simply stop by their nearby Pen Air branch or call (850) 505-3200 to make loan arrangements. Pen Air FCU will also assist non-members with a personal loan up to the amount of their paycheck for a term of six months. The interest rate will be based off of the person’s credit worthiness. Member-owners with existing Pen Air loans can contact the Credit Union to arrange for payment options.

Eastern Shore Grand Opening Celebration March 4

The new Eastern Shore office Grand Opening will be celebrated Friday, March 4. The ribbon cutting ceremony with the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by the cake-cutting ceremony. Pen Air Named 2010 Gulf Breeze Business of the Year

Pen Air Federal Credit Union has been named the 2010 Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year.

More than 250 people were in attendance at the chamber’s 2011 Awards Gala, “La Bella Notte,” on Saturday at New World Landing in Pensacola. Pen Air FCU was selected from 12 qualifying businesses as the Business of the Year.

Gulf Breeze Chamber President/CEO Meg Peltier said that Pen Air was awarded Business of the Year because of the credit union’s value of education and investment in the community.

“Pen Air has stepped up in this community and continues to support both the Gulf Breeze Chamber and the community as a whole,” Peltier said. “Pen Air employees volunteer numerous hours on Gulf Breeze Area Chamber committees, as well as support dozens of other organizations including Junior Achievement, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, United Way, and TEAM Santa Rosa, to name a few. Pen Air has been a beacon of strength and support to the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber.”

Pen Air President/CEO Ron Fields said that Pen Air is proud to be a part of the Gulf Breeze community.

“We are humbled by this award and are simply happy to make a difference,” Fields said. “We will continue to support the Gulf Breeze residents for decades to come.”

The Gulf Breeze Area Chamber was established in March 1988 and serves more than 400 businesses in the greater Gulf Breeze area.

On Monday, Feb. 7, Pen Air Federal Credit Union will be converting to a new, enhanced Internet Access service.

Last summer, 15 Pen Air member-owners, volunteered their time to come and speak with us about their Pen Air experience.

Internet Access and Bill Pay Service Conversion

In February 2011, Pen Air will be converting to a new, enhanced Internet Access service. You will have access to an even wider range of products and services to fit your changing lifestyle and financial needs. You will be able to export to Microsoft Money, Quicken, or Quickbooks, mobile banking capabilities with your PDA/phone/iPhone, receive alerts, and process remote institution-to-institution transfers.

All the usual features you expect from this service to access your funds will still be available and more. You will be required to register your information with our new system. This will involve establishing new sign-on information.

New Eastern Shore Branch Opening Jan. 10

Pen Air's newest branch will open Monday, Jan. 10! This much-anticipated branch is located at 10010 Eastern Shore Blvd., Spanish Fort, AL, 36527, just off of the Interstate 10 Malbis exit. Not only will this branch be convenient for Baldwin County members, but it's also a quick stop for Floridians heading west out of town.

Be sure to stop by this new, contemporary branch and meet branch manager Tabitha Raus and staff. A Grand Opening celebration is scheduled for February.

Office Hours Changes

Three Pen Air offices will change their Saturday hours beginning Jan. 8. The Pace and Corry Station offices will now have lobby hours from 9 a.m. to noon. The Gulf Breeze office's lobby will now be closed, but the drive-thru will continue to be open 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday. For a complete list of office hours, log on to www.penair.org.

Need to get your legal affairs in order for the New Year? Not sure what type of Will you need, much less other documents such as Powers of Attorney? Then this no-cost seminar is for you!

Save Lives, Win a Car

Pen Air has teamed up with Mentor Leaders and Sandy Sansing Nissan for a win/win opportunity on Feb.5, 2011.

All Pen Air offices are accepting $99 donations, which gives the donor an opportunity to win a new 2011 Nissan Murano or Maxima, among other prizes. The proceeds will go toward building fresh water wells, basic medical needs and orphans in Togo, West Africa. The winners will be drawn at 1 p.m. Feb. 5 at Sandy Sansing Nissan.

$2,500 Toys for Tots donation

MGySgt. Roberto Rivera, Toys for Tots Coordinator for Marine Aviation Training Support Group-24 graciously accepted a $500 check and a truckload of toys from Pen Air Federal Credit Union on behalf of the Toys for Tots Foundation.

“We thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Rivera said. “We couldn’t do it without your support.”

Pen Air FCU President and Chief Executive Officer Ron Fields said he was more than happy to offer all Pen Air FCU offices as drop-off locations.

“Pen Air FCU has supported Toys for Tots for several years now,” Fields said. “I am extremely proud of the continued outpouring of generosity from all of our employees and member-owners to help underprivileged children.”

The Marine Corps spent countless hours setting up drop box locations, conducting fundraisers, and spreading the word about the Toys for Tots Foundation and how the foundation benefits underprivileged children in the community.

Along with a $500 check, an estimated $2,000 in toys was donated as well.

The Pen Air Federal Credit Union Marketeers headed out to NAS Pensacola to help entertain the kids selected for the special Christmas Party at the Youth Center Dec. 8. Penny the Pen Air Porpoise was with them, and led the kids in "The 12 Days of Christmas" and "The Chicken Dance."

There were also plenty of crafts for the kids to do, including coloring the very popular Pen Air balsa wood airplanes.

Pen Air FCU hosted a free buffet dinner, with a chance to win a cruise vacation Monday night at the Southern Panhandle Restaurant. Each person who attended got a free buffet dinner, goodie bag and a chance to win a Cruise for 2! The community was invited - no one had to be a member of the credit union to join us for dinner! To be entered for the Cruise for 2 raffle, Pen Air members needed to bring a non-Pen Air friend with them to the dinner. Non-members needed to join the credit union to be entered in the drawing!

Pen Air donates 65 turkeys to the local USO

Presenting the 65 turkeys and $500 donation to local sailors stationed at NAS Pensacola are, from left to right: AVP/Military Liaison John Ochs, EVP/CFO David Tuyo, CEO Ron Fields and EVP/COO Carroll Scarborough.

When the USO called for help to feed the multitude of troops remaining on NAS Pensacola during Thanksgiving, Pen Air Federal Credit Union had sleeves rolled up ready to help. Pen Air FCU generously contributed $500 for supplies and over 65, 12-16 pound turkeys. Heidi Blair, USO Center Director, explains, “Without the support from individuals and businesses like Pen Air Federal Credit Union, we simply could not keep up with the needs of those we serve and who serve us.” USO Program Manager, Kathy Karsten, was present during the turkey delivery and had these words to share, “I am overwhelmed by the generosity of Pen Air Federal Credit Union and how quickly they have come to our aide in ensuring our troops get a proper Thanksgiving meal.”

The USO is a non-profit organization with a mission to support the active military serving our country. The local Pensacola USO is set up at the Pensacola Regional Airport with space to receive and send on active military and now at their new facility onboard NAS Pensacola. The USO receives all its financial support from private donations. These donations help provide support for programs that assist deployed personnel and their dependents.

“The USO has always been there for our military, and Pen Air Federal Credit Union is proud to be able to be there for the USO – if you support our military, you should support your local USO,” said Pen Air FCU President/CEO Ron Fields. “We are honored to be able to help the USO any way we can to make the lives of our service men and women whether at home or abroad better.”

Pen Air "Walks" for a cure...

Pen Air employees and members recently joined forces to raise $39,665 locally for charities.

For several months, Pen Air employees have been hosting fundraisers, such as barbecues and bake sales, for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk Oct. 21 and the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Mall-to-Mall Walk Oct. 30. Pen Air donated $22,000 to LLS and $17,665 to ACS.

Pen Air FCU goes 'Extreme" for the Gaston Family

Pen Air Federal Credit Union has teamed up with other local companies and organizations to assist one fortunate Gulf Coast family.

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition television show selected Finis Gaston and his family to be the recipient of a new Escambia County home donated by the local community and built by local volunteers. The home was revealed to the family with much fanfare Oct. 24. At that event, Pen Air FCU announced that it will be investing up to $50,000 over the next few years to the Gaston Family Housing Trust to help them with house maintenance costs such as taxes and insurance, while Gaston completes his degree in social work at the University of West Florida, which donated scholarships to the entire family.

“Pen Air has always invested in the community by providing affordable loans and services to the community,” said Ron Fields, CEO of Pen Air FCU. “The community is looking for the direction of strength and Pen Air is proud to be the beacon of light for the Gaston Family.”

Education is a priority for Pen Air FCU, and the credit union continuously supports local school sports programs, has opened three student-run credit unions in area high schools and recently launched the Share It debit card program, where $.01 of each signature transaction is donated to local schools.

Gaston said he felt overwhelmed with gratitude.

“Thank you very much,” Gaston said. “We are so blessed. All these people don’t even know us. I feel the love from the community.”

Show producers said Pen Air’s assistance was crucial to the family’s success, long after the filming ends.

“Pen Air Federal Credit Union really came through when we needed them to,” said EM:HE Senior Producer Diane Korman. “Their amazing generosity is so important to the Gaston Family’s success as they begin the next chapter in their lives. ”

Pen Air was just one of many local companies to get involved to assist the Gastons. Heritage Homes, University of West Florida, Community Enterprise Investments, Inc., Cox Cable, Gulf Power and 1-800 Charity Cars were just a few of the helping hands in this project.

“Pen Air really stepped up to the plate to help this family. We are so grateful for their generosity not only to the family but also to the community,” said Sharon Saltee, Locations Coordinator for Heritage Homes. “Ron Fields did an amazing job getting past the red tape and invested with his heart. Pen Air helped get it done quickly to ensure that this family was taken care of.”

CEII Chairman Sam Horton has been a Pen Air member since 1969 and he said he was surprised and pleased that Pen Air offered to help the Gaston family.

One lucky Pensacola family will get a whole new home, a crew of hundreds to make it happen in four and half days, with Ty Pennington at its helm! Pen Air FCU unveiled a new drive-up ATM aboard NAS Whiting Field Friday, with the base commanding officer Capt. Pete Hall being the first member to use the machine to extract cash.

The weekend of July 16 was a busy one for Pen Air FCU! Friday night we were at the Stir It Up contemporary Christian concert aboard NAS Pensacola, handing out goodies, like the popular flying discs and glow sticks, and spreading the news about our new debit card program that gives back to local schools, Share It.

Saturday we had our first ever Switch It Saturday at the Gulf Breeze branch, encouraging mebers and non-members alike to stop by and allows us to assist inswitching their checking accounts, loans and other financial services over to Pen Air FCU. About 20 people took advantage of the event - and several of them went home with more than a fabulous new financial experience... we gave away a Cruise for 2 every half hour! The proposed bill favors big banks over small credit unions by limiting the amount of fees (interchange) that merchants pay when customers use a debit card. This bill could allow big, national retailers to pick and choose which debit cards to accept, and limit when and where you can use your card.

Credit unions offer debit cards as a free benefit to their members. It costs a great deal of money to offer these cards, including the cost of absorbing fraud losses, providing member service support, and making and sending the cards. The interchange fees we receive from retail stores helps us cover those costs and earn a reasonable return for our members. This proposed bill would give an advantage to the big, national banks at the expense of credit unions and community banks that would be forced to raise fees for card services – or stop offering debit and credit cards altogether.

There is still time to stop this punitive law from being passed. With the help of our credit union members, we can make our voices heard in Washington and preserve the benefits that come from belonging to a financial cooperative where members help each other.

Pace Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament

Friday's Pace Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament was a well-attended event, and while the rain threatened to strike, it was kept at bay long enough for the tournament to finish. Pen Air FCU was the title sponsor and everyone had a great time as they raised awareness about the Credit Union.

Save It! Five tips to help you save more money

April in Financial Literacy month - on of Pen Air FCU's favorite months of the year! Throughout the month, we will be posting tips and tricks to help you save, and maybe even earn, more money. Here are some great ideas from PSECU, a credit union in Pennsylvania:

Saving money isn't easy. You think to yourself, I just can't do it. I have too many bills. I've already stretched my income as far as it will go!
As hard as it may be to save, holding onto money can be really helpful for when those unforeseen emergencies come up like the loss of a job, car repairs, and home repairs. All of those pesky things that pop up in life are much more manageable when there's money set aside to deal with them. Here are a few ways you could start saving today.

• Set up Direct Deposit. Take the time to set up to have money taken directly out of your paycheck into an IRA, CD or Money Market account. You won't feel the itch to spend your extra dough because once it's set up, the money transfer happens automatically and you don't have to do a thing.

• Hold onto money that you otherwise wouldn't have. Income-tax refunds, holiday money, the amount of money you saved for the electric bill and didn't need to use. This takes some discipline, but is well worth the effort. Again, having peace of mind that you have money to handle unforeseen circumstances is worth forgoing putting extra money toward that new electronic gadget you wanted to buy.

• Stop and think before you spend. That dinner out cost more than you spend on groceries in a week. That pair of shoes is worth more than two full tanks of gas. Learn what your money is worth to you, and you won't be so quick to dispose of it.

• Get your mortgage costs down. First, look at whether the rate is too high. If it is, you may want to consider refinancing. And, while not possible for everyone, pay ahead on your mortgage. If you can swing an extra $100 per month, you will save thousands in interest costs over the long haul.

• Don't pay unnecessary fees on your money. First of all, if you have an account with PSECU, that's a great way to avoid fees. At PSECU, we're transparent about our fees. Pen Air FCU golf tournament raises more than $16,000

Friday's 10th Annual Pen Air FCU charity golf tournament to benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society raised more than $16,000, with more funds on their way!

Pen Air FCU now has magnets to hand out to our wonderful members! The simply say, "LOVE IT! Proud Member of Pen Air Federal Credit Union".

Some of our proud members are employees - and they went a little overboard with putting the magnets on their supervisors' vehicles!

Teresa Bird, Branch Manager at the Pace office, had a surprise waiting for her - which she did not discover until she had driven home with the magnets on her car...

The Marketing Department borrowed the idea a week later, peppering V.P. of Marketing Patty Veal's minivan with magnets... also on the passenger side. She didn't notice until the next morning when her daughter went to get in the car for school. And she just thought everyobe was being friendly, smiling and waving at her as she drove home the night before!
