Card Security Breaches: Why They Occur And Who's To Blame

It seems like there's another financial disaster at every turn lately. Target's card databases get hacked. Heartbleed puts your passwords at risk. Home Depot's credit card numbers are compromised. JP Morgan Chase's credit information is breached. Shellshock threatens the integrity of the Internet. It's enough to make you long for the days of the corner store keeping credit on a sheet of graph paper.

To better understand how these things happen, let's first take a look at the steps involved in a financial transaction. Then, we'll see where vulnerabilities exist. Finally, we'll check out a few strategies you can use to keep yourself safe.

When you swipe your debit or credit card at a terminal, the only thing you see is an approval screen. Behind the scenes, the process from the moment you swipe a card to leaving the store with your purchases is complicated. And you want it to be that way. A less complicated process would remove many layers of security.

First, there's an "authentication" process. The POS terminal in which you swipe your card reads the card's information from the magnetic strip, encrypts it, and sends it to a payment processing center. This facility streamlines the data into a format your issuing company can understand and sends it along. Your card network company - Visa, Mastercard, Discover, etc. - validates the legitimacy of the information. You may be prompted for some information, most commonly your billing ZIP code. This is done to help authenticate the card.

Second, there's the reconciliation process. This is usually done at the end of the day for most retailers. The retailer sends all the day's receipts to a payment processor, which then sends them to the issuing institution - the credit union, bank, or credit card company. That institution debits its member or customer accounts for the amount of the transaction, then sends that money to the payment processor, which sends it to the retailer.

This is an explanation of how things work in a very simplified example, but it gives you an idea of the complexity that's involved in the process of paying with a card. While it's a lot of steps, it's the best system that the brightest minds in the financial industry could develop. Unfortunately, each step also introduces a layer of vulnerability.

The encryption protocol for card authentication can be busted (that was, in part, what Heartbleed was about). The retailer's receipt records they use for reconciliation can be hacked (like what happened to Target and Home Depot). The credit union or bank can have their register of accounts hacked (like JP Morgan did). So many layers of complexity create more possibilities for hackers to compromise sensitive information.

You might notice that there's only one step in the process that involves Pen Air FCU or our computer systems. That comes at the very end of the process, when member records are debited for purchases. In the latter example, the only victim of that theft was a big Wall Street bank. In such cases, the kind of hacking hardware and know-how that is required to orchestrate such an attack are expensive. Because credit unions are smaller and less centralized, they're much less likely to be targeted by this kind of attack.

That's not to say Pen Air FCU doesn't take cyber security seriously. We keep up-to-date with the latest in computer hardware and software to make sure our members are secure against illegal access. We also have to adapt to a world where everyone else doesn't follow those same values. That means we have to adjust our security protocols to cover for the failings of other parts of that big, messy system.

We're all in this together. The convenience of the modern economy makes things better for everybody. If you go on vacation, you don't have to fuss with traveler's checks or currency exchange troubles. You can take your debit card or credit card and spend just the same. Electronic record keeping helps financial institutions keep costs down and we all benefit from a growing economy. If we want to keep getting these benefits, we all need to put the work in to make sure our networks are secure. Here are five small tips to make your little corner of the Internet more secure.
  1. Install updates for your computer, tablet, and mobile phone regularly.
  2. Don't open suspicious e-mails or questionable links.
  3. Don't install software you don't recognize.
  4. Monitor your financial statements closely to check for unauthorized activities.
  5. Get an anti-virus program and run it regularly.
If you follow these five steps, you can help make the Internet a safer place for people to share things they love and buy things they need. You can help make sure the big system of merchants, processors, and institutions keeps chugging along while providing benefits to everyone.

Moving Your Retirement is an Important Decision

What should you do with your retirement plan if you're changing jobs or retiring?

It’s essential that you make this decision and the proper arrangements before you leave your company or you could lose a large portion of your savings to taxes or penalty fees.

Three key benefits of an Individual Retirement Account (IRA):

  2. Avoid 20% withholding – You can keep your account intact
  3. Convenience and flexibility – It’s easy to open an IRA rollover account. You may be able to add additional contributions to your IRA depending upon your situation, although this may not be appropriate for every investo

Financial Goals: Staying Focused And Motivated

As we enter 2014, many of us have set resolutions for ourselves. A new year creates an opportunity for a fresh start, especially when it comes to our finances. Defining goals and putting a plan in place is essential to personal financial success. But that’s only part of the battle. Maintaining attitudes and behaviors to get you to those goals takes effort. But it doesn't have to be grueling. There are techniques you can adopt to make the journey quicker and easier!

Envision success
Visualizing yourself enjoying the achievement of your goal can help you remember why you’re doing it in the first place. For example, if your goal is to replace you current vehicle with a new one, imagine yourself enjoying a stress-free cruise down the road with breaking down being the last thing on your mind!

Give yourself rewards along the way

If your goal involves saving $5,000, build into your plan little “presents” for yourself as you reach certain plateaus. Like for every $1,000 saved you get to put $20 toward a fun shopping item.

Make it a partnership
Is a loved one also trying to reach a specific goal? Make a pact to regularly check in with each other to monitor progress and offer encouragement. If you there isn't’ someone close to you suited for this job, look for a financial support community online.  If your goal involves other family members, do your best to not only include them in tracking progress, but get them excited about the process.

Build in reminders
Maybe it’s a Post-it note inside a cabinet you open regularly. Or perhaps it’s an electronic reminder sent via a computer scheduling application. Either way, it never hurts to get a reassuring hint that your goals are there for a reason. If you’re a highly visual person, consider putting a picture of your goal where you will see it a lot, like at your desk or in your car.

Treat setbacks as learning experiences

It’s unlikely that you will ever encounter entirely smooth sailing on your way to a financial goal. Because of this, it’s important to have the right attitude about the obstacles that spring up. If you get too discouraged, the whole plan could be lost. By treating unexpected jolts as opportunities for sharpening your skills, you put yourself in a better mind frame for ultimately reaching your destination.

Financial goals take work, but it doesn't have to feel like work. By developing techniques to stay dialed in on the process of achieving your goals, you may even find the experience enjoyable! Whether your goal is short-term or long-term, Pen Air FCU is here to help you achieve financial fitness! Visit www.penair.org to access to a variety of financial tool-kits, calculators and checklists to assist you in reaching your goals while staying motivated to achieve them!

Reinventing Holiday Shopping Rules!

Retailers are reinventing the rules on holiday shopping. You should, too!

Follow your favorite retailer business pages on TwitterFacebookPinterestGoogle ShoppingYahoo! Local, and Patch.com to find great deals and expanded price-matching opportunities, and gain some creative gift-giving ideas.

  • Download mobile apps from your favorite brands and keep current on the latest deals that may fit your needs.
  • Shop with retailers who have dropped the layaway account fees charged in prior years. Those small fees can add up if you buy at a range of stores.

Automating Your Finances

These days, you can pay your monthly mortgage or rent, utilities, insurance, loans and credit cards without lifting a finger. Automation is a great time saver – and it can also reduce your vulnerability to identity theft – but it’s also important to use it wisely.

How it Works:
There are a few different methods you can use to automate paying your bills. If available, the most convenient option is to use your credit union’s bill-paying service. You log into your checking account online, input who, how much, and when you want to pay, and your financial institution sends an electronic or paper check. You can do this as a one time or recurring payment. Another option is to set it up directly with your creditor or service provider – generally all you need to do is let them know when you want the payment taken out of your checking account and submit an authorization form. You can also use a third-party service to pay your bills. It generally does not make sense to spend money on this. The best option would be to utilize the free service from your credit union.

Avoid Complications
Scheduling automatic bill payments does not mean that you can completely forget about them. First, you want to make sure that you have enough money in your account to cover the withdrawals. You also want to verify that the withdrawal actually occurred when it was supposed to. Mistakes sometimes happen, and you are still responsible for paying your bills on time. Don’t forget to review your statements too – if you don’t, you may miss an unauthorized charge or notice of a change in terms. Lastly, if you close a checking account or credit card that you are paying bills from, be sure that you update your bill pay information so that future payments are assigned to your new account.

Automatically Save
Don’t just AutoPay – AutoSave as well!  If you wait and see what money you have left over at the end of the month, you may find that you have little or nothing left. There are typically two options for AutoSave: have a portion of your paycheck directly deposited into your savings account, or set up an automatic, monthly or biweekly transfer from your checking account to your savings account. If you choose the second option, it is best to schedule this to coincide with your payday. By automating, it will be easier to build toward your goals and establish an emergency fund.

Dream It. Achieve It.

How to Set and Attain Financial Goals

Determining Goals

If you had to choose between sitting down at the kitchen table and setting goals or sitting on the beach in the Caribbean, you would probably choose the beach. But how would you pay for the airfare? Hotel? Food? What about souvenirs?

Setting financial goals may not be very exciting and fun, but it can help you save for and achieve exciting and fun things. There’s also those things that may not be quite so exhilarating but are still very important, such as having enough money for retirement or your child’s college education.

You could just wait and see what is left over at the end of the month after you pay your bills, but since it's easy to get in the habit of spending what you make, you may wind up having no savings at all if you take this approach.

By taking the time to think about what your goals are, how much they cost, your time frame, and your regular obligations, you’ll know exactly how much you will need to save each month. This will help determine what changes you need to make to your current budget, so that you can reach your goals AND pay your bills with ease!

Do you want to buy a new computer in a year? Have a down payment for a house in four years? Be debt-free in five years? You can easily list your goals and time frame on the BALANCE Financial Goals Chart by clicking here.

Whether you’re in the market for a new home or car, or simply saving for the upcoming holidays, Pen Air FCU is here to help you save, with long and short-term investments designed to meet your specific needs, visit http://bit.ly/StashYourCash
